BSc Economics+

The Department offers a range of single and joint honours BSc programmes centred on economics. The programmes are designed to be flexible, with a common structure in year one that make it easy to switch from one speciality to another. Lectures take place in the evenings, and many of our students have combined their studies with a successful career. We usually recommend our part-time programmes for those with full-time jobs.

BSc Degree with Foundation Year

The department offers a 4 year degree programme with foundation year for students who have been away from studies for some time, or who do not currently meet the entry requirements for direct entry. Foundation year students are eligible for full student loan funding (covering 4 years plus one).

Courses in the first year

We have designed our programmes with flexibility in mind, and all or our "Economics+" programmes share a common structure in the first year.

  • Introduction to Economics
This module will introduce students to current issues in the economy, and the models that economists use to understand them.

  • A Quantitative Module
This module gives students a grounding in the basic mathematics and statistics that they will use in their studies. Two quantitative modules are offered - one for students who are relatively confident with mathematics, and one that offers a more gentle introduction to key concepts.

  • IT and Professional Skills
This module gives students a practical introduction to statistics using R and Excel, advice on how to work with data, and a hand-on introduction to report writing.

  • A subject-specific module
This is a module in which students learn specialist skills relevant to their chosen degree programme.
