Tom and James from Support host sessions every Wednesday at 1400 GMT to review the basic functionality of Turnitin. Please sign up for your online training session using the link below. Sessions have been designed for Turnitin administrators and instructors and are not suitable for students and there are no limits to the number of attendees to these FREE webinars so feel free to share this with your colleagues.

Welcome to the Academic Development Programme for the summer term 2011, organised by the CLPD. The overall aim of the Academic Development Programme is to provide an opportunity for colleagues who work in a wide variety of disciplines to network and share ideas about teaching and learning with other academic staff. Problem based learning (2 hours) (Professor Hilary Downes, Earth and Planetary Sciences)

Tuesday 31 May 15.00 - 17.00

Professor Downes will share her experience of using problem-based learning in an advanced module in Earth and Planetary Sciences, in which students undertake a series of short projects over 11 weeks, based on real-world research in Earth Sciences. The workshop will will appeal to anyone who does research in their subject.

Assessment and Feedback (2 hours) (Dr Vincent Tong, Earth and Planetary Sciences)

Thursday 2nd June 12.00-14.00

Providing feedback to students' coursework and assignments is an important part of teaching, and students have consistently demanded timely and useful feedback according to a wide range of surveys and studies. However, giving high-quality feedback can be very time-consuming. In this workshop, we will discuss and explore new ways of providing effective and time-efficient advice to students on their work.

This workshop will focus on some advanced skills with PowerPoint that are particularly helpful to lecturers. Topics will include:

• Incorporating sound and/or video in slides

• Working with charts and flowcharts

• Interactive navigations

• Slide timings and slide show control

• Animating chart elements

Basic knowledge of PowerPoint assumed

Wednesday June 22nd 2.30 - 16.00

The widening use of technology within teaching has enabled the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences to offer flexible learning models to students. This provision has proved to be very popular amongst the student body and has fed into improving the student learning experience and consequently to student retention. I will outline our strategy and development of ideas and talk about what works for our department and why.

Blogs are online diaries and wikis are editable web pages. We will cover strategies for using these tools for assessment purposes. Possible marking criteria will be discussed. Participants will set up a blog and wiki during the workshop.

Increase the visual impact of your handouts (1 hour) (Deborah Grange, CLPD)

Thursday June 30th 14:00 – 15:00

This workshop will focus on ways of creating professional-looking documents using MS Word 2007. It will cover the importing of pictures and clipart, the use of templates and other formatting tools.

BLE Modules for 2011/2

2011/2 modules have been created

2011/2 module areas have been created on the BLE, and student and staff enrolments are also now switched on, so any staff or students you attach to the modules in SITS will gain access to the relevant BLE shell soon after.

As in the past, staff who are added to modules in SITS as assessment markers (via the MKR record) will be enrolled on the corresponding BLE modules as instructors. There is a change to note this year in that staff who have been attached to modules via the Teaching Resource Manager system will automatically be added to the MKR records, and therefore will gain BLE module access.

To attach any other staff members to modules via the MKR records, please follow the instructions found on the Enrolling_Instructors page which covers:

1 Attaching staff to modules in SITS

2 Looking up a staff member's PRS Code

3 Notes regarding Sessional Lecturers

4 Associates

5 Bulk enrolment to all modules in a range

Other areas on the BLE

As well as modules, department and programme -level areas have also been set up on the BLE, but only the Learning Technology team can add staff members to these (it’s useful if you can tell us the staff member’s ITS username) - please contact us if you wish to make use of one of these areas.

We are also in the process of setting up the various custom areas (these are BLE courses which are not based on a SITS module, programme or department code) – if your department/programme has been using one of these and you would like to either do the same again, or something else in 2011/2, please let us know.

•        use text chat
•        create a web tour
•        conduct polls
•        create break-out rooms

Introduction to Blackboard (90 minutes)

Friday Jan 28th 15.00 repeated Friday Mar 4th 12:00

This workshop will consider pedagogical and practical considerations of using Blackboard to distribute learning material to your students. With no prior knowledge assumed, we will cover how to organise your module in Blackboard and how to upload Word and PowerPoint files.

Online submission of assignments (90 minutes)

Friday Feb 18th 16:00

Online submission of assignments can be more convenient for both tutors and students. It enables students to submit their work without travelling into Birkbeck; staff can access assignments online via Blackboard; non-submitters can be identified immediately; there are built-in tools to produce plagiarism reports if required; and all assignments are kept securely and fully backed-up. This workshop will cover all skills needed to set up online submission for your students. Basic knowledge of Blackboard assumed.

Use Multimedia in your Teaching (2 hours)

Thursday Mar 10th 15:00

This session will focus on ways of incorporating audio and screen casts into your teaching. We will consider a variety of tools with practical, technical and pedagogical considerations in mind. As well as providing some hands-on experience with several applications, we will also discuss where and when multimedia might best be deployed.

Elluminate in Bloomsbury: Training on 14 March 2011

Follow-up to the Bloomsbury Showcase event on 11th February 2011

Most lecturers consider live, personal interaction to be the most valuable element of the learning experience. Elluminate is a voice conferencing tool that allows synchronous communication and activities with students online within a Blackboard course. This tool is particularly useful for distance courses but can also enhance the learning experience of students on campus as presentations can be recorded and made available in Blackboard for later revision.

The Bloomsbury Elluminate Showcase

Last Friday's Elluminate event was extremely successful, with over 70 people (virtual and in the flesh) coming along to find out what Elluminate is and how it is used across our Colleges here in Bloomsbury.

Four excellent case studies were presented highlighting how Elluminate is used to:

-enable students from all over the world to learn together and interact in innovative ways (IOE)

-deliver Continuing Professional Development (RVC)

-teach students new languages (SOAS)

-deliver distance learning to global students (LSHTM)

Screencasting Help - Online Surgeries from JISC in Jan & Feb 2011

With so much educational content now delivered via computer screen - be it PowerPoint presentations, web pages and services, software demonstrations and training, or digital media - the process of capturing what you are doing on your computer and packaging this screen capture as an effective and accessible learning resource has become more and more important.

To reflect this growth in screencasting the JISC Digital Media team will be running a series of online surgeries in the New Year:
