Through an outside contractor we provide a regular cleaning service within the Birkbeck Estate & ensure the facilities are suitably clean for daily use.
Cleaning staff undertake regular cleaning to all occupied areas, waste bins are emptied daily. Corridors, main entrance areas, the reception and common areas are cleaned on a daily basis as follows:
Monday to Friday - All buildings
Saturday - Malet St and Gordon Square
Sunday - Malet Street
We also undertake periodic carpet cleaning & the cleaning of internal and external glass twice annually. Toilets are cleaned & re-stocked with consumables as and when required (Monday-Sunday in buildings scheduled above.).
If you notice any spillages or areas where cleaning activities are needed at short notice please contact the Helpdesk (ext. 2001).
Waste Disposal
If you have any boxes or large sheets of cardboard to dispose of, please would you contact the Estates & Facilities helpdesk on ext. 2001 and request the cleaners dispose of it for you.
Please do not take your own boxes and cardboard to the wheelie bins (at the rear of the College)as this encourages scavenging. The bin store becomes a mess overnight and boxes and card are strewn across the bike store.
All boxes should be broken down flat, so it is easier for the cleaners to remove it.
The cleaners will remove the boxes/cardboard (this must be broken down) to be compacted (this is a cheaper and more environmentally friendly method, as compacted waste uses less land-fill). Please note that the above should be placed outside offices or near the blue bins between 7.00 am & 9.00 am. A charge may be incurred for removal outside of these hours.
Please also contact the Estates & Facilities helpdesk if you require disposal of equipment or furniture . The Cleaners will then take this away for you. Special arrangements may have to be made for the disposal of certain items and, via a helpdesk task, we will be able to advise on the most appropriate and efficient method. We also book waste trucks to remove waste from site, but they require 24 hours notice. Again, a helpdesk task will enable us to arrange this.
Fridges/Chillers Disposal: The Estates Maintenance Department will advise on disposal and arrangements for removal. Please place a task with Estates and Facilities Helpdesk (x2001).
Shredding - secure or bulk shredding services are provided by the recycling company. Bags and security tags are available from the Print Unit (x6300). Full sacks will be removed by the College Porters. You should contact the Estates and Facilities Helpdesk (x 2001) and place a task for collection. Small volume shredding may be carried out at the Print Unit. Individuals are asked to contact the Print Unit to ensure a convenient time to use the shredder. They should then bring their shredding to the Unit and shred their papers themselves.
Pest Control: Preventive and reactive Pest Control services are provided. Please contact Estates & Facilities Helpdesk (x2001).
