Introduction

Born on the Champs Elysées in Paris in 1834, George du Maurier was a British author and cartoonist for satirical magazine Punch. In the latter capacity he notably dealt, in a light-hearted manner, with Darwin’s theories. His horror novel Trilby, published in 1894, was one of the most popular of its time. Set in the 1850s in an idyllic bohemian Paris it memorably features the character Svengali, a Jewish rogue, musician and irresistible hypnotist. Indicative of the novel’s success is that the very terms “svengali” and “trilby” (to denote a type of hat), both originate here. Du Maurier died in Paddington, London, in 1896.
