Introduction

Born in 1843, Frederic Myers was an English poet, essayist and psychic researcher who was one of the early leading (and founding) members of the Society for Psychical Research, established in 1882. In the context of late-Victorian experiments with séances and the spirit world, Myers’ research interests in testing the possibility of spiritual afterlife over-lapped with certain aspects of contemporary, more mainstream, psychology and its exploration of unconscious aspects of identity. Myers died in Rome in 1901. This article provides his own theory of the complexity of human personality, based on his reading of various psychiatric case histories.
