Introduction

The British philosopher, MP, political theorist and economist John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), was one of the most influential classical liberal thinkers of the 19th century. In an anonymous letter to Fraser’s Magazine in 1850, which later came to be known by the title The Negro Question, Mill refuted Thomas Carlyle’s previous argument in favour of slavery in the same publication.
