Introduction

Arnold White was born in Hereford in 1848. A polemical journalist and political agitator, White spent the 1880s studying the social question in East London, publishing his 1886 book The Problems of a Great City as a result. An ardent “restrictionist”, White pushed for restrictions on the entry of “destitute” Eastern European Jews into the UK.

Published in 1899, The Modern Jew alleged that Jews had been unsuccessful at assimilating into British culture, but had achieved authority over the so-called English race through their ability to control influential administrative positions. White charged Jews with creating a state within the state and drew attention to the absolute solidarity of world Jewry and its immense power, which he claimed constituted a threat to British international interests.
