Introduction

Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was an English explorer, orientalist, ethnologist, and writer. His work The Lake Regions of Central Africa, published in 1860, describes Burton’s fraught 3-year journey from Zanzibar to Lake Tanganyika, during which he sought to discover the source of the Nile. In an attempt to interest both the scholar and the lay reader, Burton mingles accounts of his own adventures with more scientific, geographic and socio-cultural observations.
