Introduction

The British philosopher, MP, political theorist and economist John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was one of the most influential classical liberal thinkers of the 19th century. In 1850, Mill sent an anonymous letter to Fraser’s Magazine (which later acquired the title The Negro Question) in which he eloquently refutes Thomas Carlyle’s previous argument in the same publication.
