Introduction

Jack London (1876-1916), the American author of The Call of the Wild and White Fang, published The People of the Abyss in 1903. Its first-hand account of life in the East End of London details his experiences in the workhouses and on the streets, reflecting those endured by the estimated 500,000-strong population of London’s poor.
