Introduction

John Atkinson Hobson (1858-1940) was an English economist, writer and lecturer, and a prominent critic of imperialism. Covering the Second Boer War for the Manchester Guardian, Hobson became convinced that imperialism was a direct result of the expansion of modern capitalism. Returning to England, he strongly condemned the conflict. The Psychology of Jingoism (1901), from which this extract is taken, was one of the subsequent series of books that explored connections between imperialism and international conflict.
