George H Savage (1842-1921)

George H Savage (1842-1921) trained at Guy’s Hospital in London and went on to become Physician-Superintendent at the Bethlem Hospital and then Lecturer in Mental Disease and Consultant Physician at Guys. As well as becoming editor of the Journal of Medical Science he wrote numerous articles on mental health as well as a standard textbook, Insanity and Allied Neurosis, published in 1884. He resigned his post at the Bethlem in 1888 after a scandal concerning the number of patients who died in his care and his excessive prescription of chemicals and narcotics, however he retained an eminent reputation including amongst his private patients the family of Leslie Stephen including his daughter Virginia, later Virginia Woolf.
