Moira Welch
MA Arts Management
Now a Project Assistant at the Public Catalogue Foundation, Moira particularly valued the work placement experience that is part of the MA Arts Policy:
'I chose Birkbeck because of the structure and flexibility that the Arts Policy and Management MA offered me. I was able to tailor the courses of the MA to suit me and my specific interests. I was also looking for a course with a strong vocational aspect, and the Birkbeck Arts Management degree has this.
'From the initial interview, you are encouraged to start thinking about what kind of organisation you would like to work for, and luckily, Birkbeck have excellent links with many arts organisations locally, nationally and even internationally.
'The six-month work placement I undertook at an arts and education charity in East London gave me solid experience that put into practice the ‘theory’ I was learning on my MA. Having this work experience behind me put me at a distinct advantage when I started applying for jobs.
'The staff and quality of the teaching at Birkbeck are excellent, and this is something that my current employers were well aware of when they interviewed me. And, I have no doubt that the foundation that Birkbeck gave me was the reason that soon after graduating I was offered a position as Project Assistant at the Public Catalogue Foundation.
'The year I spent at Birkbeck was definitely a challenge, but more importantly, was an extremely rewarding academic experience that has helped me to get the job I wanted.'
