Research interests

My research and teaching interests are principally in the history of cinema and film theory. I have mainly worked on French cinema, but in recent years I have started pursuing new lines of enquiry into ‘audiovisual film history’ and documentary cinema, thus developing my profile towards transnational and intermedial research in film and television. As an experienced research supervisor and PhD examiner, I would welcome applications from research students with projects in any of these areas, as well as certain topics within modern French thought and contemporary French culture.

Amongst my current research projects, firstly I am writing a book about Jean-Luc Godard, provisionally entitled Experiment and Experience: A Critical Introduction to the Work of Jean-Luc Godard, for Reaktion Books. Secondly, I am editing an anthology of the critical writings of Richard Roud, entitled Decades Never Start On Time, for BFI Palgrave Macmillan. Thirdly, I am working with my colleague Michael Witt on a new edition, considerably revised and expanded, of The French Cinema Book, for BFI Palgrave Macmillan.
