Cultural and academic events:

    A significant collaborative dimension of my research career has involved organising and promoting research-led film events at various cultural institutions over the last ten years, for example:

    • 2012 ‘Looking at Britain: la société britannique à travers son cinéma documentaire’, three-month film season commissioned by the Parisian art gallery Le Bal to run in conjunction with the British photographer Chris Killip’s exhibition What Happened: Great Britain 1970-1990.
    • 2008 ‘Paradise Now! Essential French Avant-Garde Cinema 1890-2008’, three-month film season co-curated with Nicole Brenez and Michael Witt, Tate Modern, 14 March-2 May 2008.
    • 2004 ‘French Documentary Cinema’, one-month film season, co-curated with Michael Witt, National Film Theatre, April 2004.
    • 2004-2006 ‘Sunday French Classics’, weekly season of film presentations at French Institute, London, related to French Cinema Book (BFI, 2004)
    • 2001 ‘For Ever Godard’, four-day international conference, co-organised with James Williams and Michael Witt, Tate Modern, London, June 2001.
    • 1999-2003 ‘Rethinking French Cinema’, series of study days at National Film Theatre, co-curated with Michael Witt, on following topics: ‘Cinema and Television’, ‘Cinema of the Occupation’, ‘Émigré Influences on French Cinema’, ‘French Film Noir’, ‘Gender and French Cinema’, ‘Forms of Early French Cinema’, ‘French Documentary Cinema’.
    • 1999 ‘Documentary/fiction’, one-day conference, co-organised with Stella Bruzzi for Film Study Group, Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, London, June 1999.
    • 1998-1999 French Film Days, study days on ‘Renoir/Godard’, ‘René Clair’, ‘Agnès Varda’, National Film Theatre.

Professional bodies and editorship of journals:

  • Since 2005, elected member of Executive Board (conseil d’administration) of Association Française de Recherche sur l’Histoire du Cinéma (AFRHC); 2005-2008, member of editorial board (conseil de rédaction) of 1895 revue d’histoire du cinéma, the journal of the AFRHC.
  • 2001-2010, member of advisory board of Studies in French Cinema.
