Dr Muriel Temple

aka Dr Muriel Tinel-Temple. Associate Lecturer in Film Studies.

I’ve been associate lecturer at Birkbeck since 2012. I teach Film Studies in the Department of Film, Media and Cultural Studies (especially the module ‘Cinema Today’ and often sessions for the modules ‘Documentary’ and ‘French Cinema’), and I teach French language in the department of Cultures and Languages.

I hold a PhD in Film Studies (‘The Filmic Self-Portrait’, EHESS-Paris, 2004), and I’ve recently published a book based upon this work: Le cinéaste au travail: autoportraits (The Filmmaker at work: self-portraits, Paris: Hermann, 2016). I have written several articles about first person cinema and I co-founded the international research group ‘Self-Representation in Visual Culture’ ( The group has organised several screenings and other events at Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image and we are now preparing an edited book of essays, The Self-Portrait in the Moving Image, for Peter Lang. My work includes as well a long running research about films and programmes commissioned by French TV during the 1970s and 1980s, and I notably gave papers about Jean Eustache and Chantal Akerman in that context.
