Recent lectures and conference papers

Recent lectures have been on Franco Zeffirelli and transnational cinema (Manchester) and on Fellini's Amarcord (British Museum); on Italian film noir (Leeds, Cardiff, Courmayeur Noir in Festival) and conference papers in this area – on low-budget 1970s Italian cop films (Popular European Cinema 5, Paris, 2007); representations of terrorism in Italian cinema (SIS, Bangor); the evolution of the language of Italian noir (Antwerp University, 2006); the Italian femme fatale (London, Exeter); surveillance and cinema (Cambridge); the cinematic exploration of the nature of power in the 1970s (Cambridge); giallo and nero (Monash University Study Centre, Prato, Italy).

Mary's interest in the effects of new media developments has resulted in conference papers on how Italian filmmakers build a constituency (University of Melbourne, Australia (2011)), the Italian star as brand (Cambridge 2011) and  the role of DVD extras in prolonging the popularity of Italian horror film directors (Popular Italian Cinema, Kings College London, 2009). She has also given conference papers on the difficulties of marking difference in Italian cinema (Manchester Metropolitian) and on cinematic engagement with the Balkans conflicts (Kingston); on European ‘quality’ cinema (Amsterdam, Northumbria); on visual style and cinematic space (Bath, Aberystwyth, ASMI, Institute of Romance Studies, University of London); on Rosi’s Carmen (Newcastle), Il caso Mattei (ASMI) and Uomini contro (Università di Camerino); on ‘pink’ neorealism (Newcastle); and on Eric Rohmer (French Institute).
