Two Birkbeck performance students to premier dance duet

Martine Painter and Hamish MacPherson, both students on the Performance: Dance programme, will be performing the premier of their duet, ‘Meeting Place’ on January 10 2012 at The Place, London, as part of Resolution!, a season of dance works by emerging choreographers.

In true Birkbeck tradition, Martine and Hamish have found ways to develop their skills and experience in performance alongside their day jobs. Martine, who works as a librarian, has choreographed one group work and two duets during the time she has spent on the course. She also teaches dance to learning-disabled adults and Movement in Performance classes for drama students. Hamish works as a civil servant and has been performing his own work since 2010, after studying art and philosophy.

The pair were so inspired by the choreography module of their course, led by celebrated choreographer and dancer Eva Recacha, that they went on to make a piece of work which was accepted to be premiered at the biggest European platform for new choreographers: Resolution! at the world-famous contemporary dance venue The Place.

Their duet ‘Meeting Place’ uses algorithms as its starting point. They play with the concept of making the algorithm evolve visually, and as this takes place, an intimate and sometimes comic relationship emerges between the two dancers.
