Purcell in Context Study Day

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) ranks as one of Britain's finest composers; however his musical background was not entirely British.

During this Study Day, we will examine the influences on him from the French style of Lully, from early and mid-seventeenth century Italian composers including Monteverdi, and his synthesis of these with the English music of his predecessors, particularly church music, instrumental music and song. Looking at a cross-section of Purcell’s works we should then be in a position to place his music in its historical context.
