Jazz in Europe Study Day

Saturday 6 March 2010 10.30am-4.30pm
Room 532, Birkbeck Main Building
Birkbeck, University of London

Pauline Greene leads a day looking at the spread of jazz from America to Europe from the 20s onwards.

Jazz brought fun, syncopation and excitement from the New World to the Old. American musicians arrived in Europe to play for enthusiastic crowds while recordings, sheet music and later, radio and magazines, ensured it spread.

From this input grew a style of European jazz which took the American model and added its own special flavour. Jazz survived wars and political repression to flourish in fusion with European musical styles, and its own New Orleans revival, to produce stunning players of its own now.

The renowned jazz violinist Julian Ferraretto joins us at the end of the day to discuss his take on the development of jazz in Europe, and the influences on his own music. We finish with his playing some of his own striking jazz pieces.
