Dr Chris Smewing

Chris Smewing is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and an honorary Research Fellow with the Centre for Sustainable Working Life at Birkbeck, University London. He brings to this academic post extensive practical experience of working as an HR specialist and business psychology consultant. Chris has worked as an independent practitioner since setting up his own company (Professional Minds Ltd) in 2006. Prior to that he worked as a consultant for a number of companies including Linkage, Interactive Skills, and Cubiks, where he was Head of Psychology.

He completed his MSc in Occupational Psychology at the University of Nottingham in 1991, and his PhD in 1995, whilst working at Birkbeck. He is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and former Chair person of the Occupational Section of the BPS.

Chris’ main areas of expertise are individual assessment and coaching, competency modelling, assessment centre design and facilitation, and leadership development. He enjoys working with teams and individuals to help them recognise and develop their skills and contribution to the organisation. He has worked with many types of organisations, both private and public sector, across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Chris holds both Levels A (ability) and B (personality) Psychometric Qualifications and is qualified to use a range of psychometrics including the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (OPP); the 16PF (OPP); the OPQ32  (SHL); PAPI (Cubiks); Wave (Saville) and the EIQ (JCA).
