Building Urban Cultures Conference
22 October 2010, 9am-5pm
Birkbeck, University of London
Building Urban Cultures is about the transformation of the cultural landscapes (physical and conceptual) of cities through collaborations and partnerships across sectors and art/cultural forms. The current economic crisis places this in sharp relief.
The conference showcases the work of Southampton Heritage and Arts People (SHAPe), an urban regeneration cultural partnership aimed at regeneration through the creation of a new cultural quarter in the heart of the city. The conference also highlights the cultural partnerships forged as part of the work of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) whose ‘primary role is to make sure the venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Games are delivered on time, to budget and are fit for purpose’. A part of that purpose is the cultural infrastructure and its legacy. The cultural agenda is led by their Head of Arts and Cultural Strategy, Sarah Weir, who joins Stephen Foster, Chair of SHAPe and Director of the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton, as a keynote speaker. Martin Bright, the third keynote speaker, is co-author of Survival in Hard Times and founder of NEW Deal of the Mind, a coalition of artists, entrepreneurs, academics and opinion formers working to boost employment in Britain's creative sector during the current recession.
