The 10 May symposium on Alice Notley's work took the centrality of voice to her writing as its
model, aiming to find in the event a form that could do justice to her range, and set loose the
exchange among a community of friends brought together for the occasion. Everyone chose a poem,
or section of poetry, speaking for just ten minutes, leaving the rest of the time free for open
discussion. To engage with Alice's voice in a sustained way, and encounter the nature of those
choices, was remarkable. The constellation of responses it produced is ongoing, and still widening.
