Sappho Xenakis

Dr. Sappho Xenakis is a Co-Director of the Centre for Political Economy and Institutional Studies (CPEIS). She is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology in the School of Law at Birkbeck, where she is also Director of the MSc programme in Global Criminology and convenor of the Birkbeck Criminology Seminar Series. Her work explores the political economy of crime and punishment from national, comparative and transnational perspectives. In particular, her research examines the intersections between, on one hand, the political environment and socio-economic conditions and, on the other hand, levels and patterns of common, white-collar, and organised criminality, political violence, and state punitiveness (especially in the form of imprisonment).
