Professor Matthew Innes, The Vice-Master

The Vice Master, Professor Matthew Innes, deputises for the Master, as required, across the full range of the duties of head of institution and acts for and supports the Master in relation to public facing College events, communication with the media and relationships with external stakeholders, representative groups, institutions, collaborators and funding bodies normally handled directly by the head of institution;

Academic Strategy, Planning, Resource Management and Staffing

  • working closely with the Executive Deans, Pro Vice Masters and College Secretary, Matthew has responsibility for overseeing and co-ordinating the development and implementation of academic strategy within the framework established by the Master, in a way that ensures the effective integration of School plans with the Pro Vice Masters' plans in relation to their cross-cutting College portfolios and the plans for the professional services developed by the College Secretary.
  • He takes a leading role in ensuring that College plans developed through this process are clearly communicated and understood at all levels of the College.
  • He has day-to-day responsibility for academic resource allocation, management and review within the College, reporting to the Master and via the Master to Governors;
  • He negotiates and reviews annual strategic plans and budget allocations for Academic Schools and reviews Professional Service plans and budget allocations to ensure they are aligned with academic strategy and objectives, working with the College Secretary and Deputy Secretary;
  • He works with the Director of Finance and the College Secretary to articulate a financial strategy that both supports the College’s academic aims and our agreed financial sustainability objectives, as agreed with the Master and via the Master with Governors; and leads on the development of the College’s interlinked fee, bursary and scholarship strategy;
  • He takes an overview of performance against the College’s agreed plans and objectives and our externally benchmarked performance;
  • With the Director of Human Resources, he leads discussions and formal negotiations with the College Trade Unions and liaises with Schools on academic staffing matters.
