Teaching Committee

Terms of reference

The Teaching Committee is a Committee of the Academic Board.

Terms of reference

i) To advise the Academic Board on:

the development, maintenance and monitoring of College strategy, policy and regulations concerning:

• programmes of study offered by the College and their constituent components, the development and introduction of new programmes, the amendment of existing programmes, the withdrawal or suspension of programmes of study

• learning and teaching including staff development initiatives and enhancements within this area

• the establishment and maintenance of codes of practice, codes of conduct, and rules of procedure relating to:

the academic rights and obligations of students,
the teaching, learning, assessment and supervision of students,

subject, wherever appropriate, to the constraints of University regulations.

ii) It shall be a principal duty of the Committee to establish and operate procedures for:

• approving new programmes, including their constituent components, and amendments to existing programmes

• monitoring academic standards through the above process in conjunction, where appropriate, with the Quality Assurance Committee

• examining strategic and thematic issues as they arise, for example, leading out from the School annual planning statements and brought to the Committee by its Chairman

• revising the College’s Learning and Teaching Strategy and reviewing its implementation

• monitoring the availability, provision and use of learning resources (including library and IT resources) in relation to programmes of study including those for research degrees,

and to report its findings with recommendations to the Academic Board each year.

iii) To advise the Academic Board, or any other bodies on behalf of the Board, on any matters referred to the Committee by or on behalf of the Board.

iv) To refer any matters relating to the allocation and suitability of teaching accommodation to the Space Management Sub-Committee and/or the Buildings Committee.

v) To establish and oversee the following Sub-Committees (and to receive reports therefrom on behalf of the Academic Board):

An Arts Degrees Committee
A Science and Social Sciences Degrees Committee
A Scholarships Sub-Committee
A Faculty of Lifelong Learning Awards Committee
A Disability Committee

vi) To establish from time to time other sub-committees, and appoint members thereof, as may be necessary to advise the Committee or to execute any of the Committee's duties.  The Chairman of any such Sub-Committee of the Teaching Committee shall, when reporting, attend a meeting of the Committee and, unless already a member, be regarded for the time being as a co-opted member of the Committee.

vii) To receive and consider reports and proposals on any of the foregoing from its Sub-Committees, from the Quality Assurance Committee, the Centre for Learning and Professional Development (CLDP), Faculties, Schools and any other representative groups of staff or student members of the College, either at the Committee's request or otherwise.

The quorum for each meeting should be one third of the membership, rounded up to a whole number.  In this case the quorum will be 12.
