Friday 8 November 2013, 10am-5pm, Birkbeck Cinema, 41 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PD

Convenors: Luciana Martins & Diane Gabrysiak

This symposium brings together scholars and curators from the UK, the United States and Latin America to provide a timely and comparative perspective on the Latin American visual archive. Stemming from the ongoing CILAVS project Latin America in Photography and Film, it seeks to lay the ground for visual histories of Europe, the US and Latin American relations to emerge, from the perspective of the production, circulation and reception of visual representations (mainly photography and film), and the ways in which these are politically, economically and affectively invested in a context of ‘informal imperialism’.

Sessions include papers on exploration, trade, utopia/dystopia and experimentation.

Confirmed speakers: Maurizio Cinquegrani (Kent), Helouise Costa (USP), Laura González-Flores (UNAM), Maurício Lissovsky (UFRJ), Adrian Locke (Royal Academy of Arts), Katherine Manthorne (CUNY), Eduardo Morettin (USP), Louise Purbrick (Brighton), Erica Segre (Cambridge), Einion Thomas (Bangor)
