Juan delGado

Saturday 8 November 2014, 2.00-5.00pm, Birkbeck Cinema, 43 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PD

Artist Juan delGado will present his recent commission The Flickering Darkness (Revisited) alongside the work by Agata Lulkowska. A panel will analyse and reflect on his audiovisual work to improve the understanding of current food policies and their impact in society and art by elaborating on the political and economic factors that promote them.

Juan delGado’s The Flickering Darkness (Revisited) is a video installation filmed at the Corabastos market in Bogotá. The market is the largest of its kind in Latin America. The video was produced during a three-month residency in the city in 2009 and re-edited for an exhibition at the Southbank Centre in September 2014, sheding light on the role of alienation, class, labour and other incumbent conceptions that affect our interpretation of the topic. With a nuanced rendition tinted by the exuberance typical of Colombia, the artist explores the route followed by the produce from its arrival at the marketplace – just before dawn – to the post of expenditure.

Juan delGado will be joined on the panel by:

  • Agata Lulkowska, Photographer and Multimedia Artist, and Artistic Director of the Discovering Latin America Film Festival.
  • Andrés David Montenegro Rosero, History of Art Teaching Fellow, University College London.
  • Mónica Schoenfeld, Agronomic Engineer and professor, member of the University Extension Programme “For a new human and sustainable economy”, Faculty of Education, Universidad Nacional de Entre Ríos (UNER), Argentina.

The event will be interpreted in British Sign Language. Spanish/ English translation and interpretation by Viviana Lombardi.
