The Department of Cultures and Languages at Birkbeck, University of London is inviting expressions of interest in a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship in Spanish and Latin American Studies. These Fellowships are designed to support outstanding early career researchers in the humanities and social sciences. We are now inviting applications for the 2020-21 outline round of these fellowships.  View the British Academy full details of the Fellowship and to check your eligibility.

The Department brings together a community of scholars with shared interests in interdisciplinary topics and transnational phenomena, covering French, German, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish-speaking cultures from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Hosting the dynamic Centre for Iberian and Latin American Visual Studies (CILAVS), our Spanish and Latin American Studies section welcomes applications from candidates with research interests in Latin American visual culture, comparative literature, culture and politics in urban spaces, environmental humanities, Spanish cultural history in the twentieth century, power and visuality in the Iberian Empire, and Spanish sociopragmatics.

This Fellowship is subject to a Departmental and also internal College competition (please see the link for further details). All applicants must get agreement from an academic in their proposed host department to act as a mentor and follow the timeline below:

i. Please contact your potential mentor by Wednesday 1st April 2020

ii. Please complete this pro-forma describing your research and submit it, along with your CV, to your potential mentor.  It may need a number of iterations before you’re both happy with it, but the finalised version needs to be with your Mentor by 5pm, Monday 4th May 2020. They will submit these, together with a short statement of support, to the Departmental panel for consideration.

iii. The Departmental panel will meet shortly after this deadline to decide who is put forward for consideration by the College Research Strategy Group (RSG) and you will be notified of the outcome.

iv. If you are chosen to go forward, your Mentor will work with you further on your pro-forma.

v. The RSG makes an ultimate decision on who is put forward to the British Academy, and they will notify you of the outcome and any feedback shortly after the meeting (normally in early July).  If you are chosen to be put forward to the British Academy, your Mentor and School Research Manager will help you complete the full application.

All applications will be considered on merit, candidates will need to demonstrate in their CV a clear research trajectory and some standing in the field, as such it is extremely unusual for Birkbeck to select a candidate without any relevant post-doctoral experience.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be directed to Professor Luciana Martins (l.martins@bbk.ac.uk).
