Citizenship studies

With increased globalisation, migration and social pluralism, there is currently worldwide interest in citizenship and citizenship education in the context of culturally diverse societies.  Citizenship is also clearly on the national agenda in the UK, evident with the introduction of citizenship education as a statutory subject in secondary schools in England, the introduction of new requirements for the acquisition of British citizenship and settlement. The way that citizenship is presented in media and policy discourses is influenced by the occurrence of key international events such as 11 September, 2001, and the London bombings in July 2005.
