Winton Capital Management establishes new prizes for top students at Birkbeck

Top students will win cash prizes of up to £1,000 for dissertations as part of a new corporate collaboration between Birkbeck and Winton Capital Management.

Top students will win cash prizes of up to £1,000 for dissertations as part of a new corporate collaboration between Birkbeck and Winton Capital Management.

The Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics within the School of Business, Economics and Informatics at Birkbeck is delighted to announce the establishment of the Winton Capital Prizes, which will be awarded to the top MSc students in Applied Statistics over the next three years.

Winton Capital’s philanthropic aid will support two prizes - £1,000 for the best project (comprising dissertation and oral presentation) and £500 for the second best Project - for MSc Applied Statistics students at Birkbeck. The Winton Prizes will be awarded for the first time in 2013 at Birkbeck’s graduation ceremonies.

Matthew Beddall, Winton Capital’s Chief Investment Officer, completed his MSc in Applied Statistics and Operational Research in 2003. He said: “I very much enjoyed my time studying at Birkbeck and have found my Master’s degree in statistics has served me well in professional life.  I am delighted to see Winton Capital contribute to support the future success of Birkbeck in this way.”

Dr Anthony Brooms, Programme Director for the MSc in Applied Statistics, added: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Winton in rewarding excellence for the project element of our Master’s programmes. The project affords each student the opportunity to put all of their theoretical knowledge into practice while working on a real life problem – which is a great advertisement for any future employer." We very much look forward to working with Winton over the next three years and to welcoming the company to Birkbeck to meet our students.

The Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics has over 40 years’ experience of delivering cutting-edge, research-led teaching. Many of the department’s academics are recognised as world-class experts and their research feeds directly into the teaching programmes.
