Dr Dell Zhang wins prize for innovative algorithm

Dr Dell Zhang (Department of Computer Science and Information Systems) recently won a prize of US$1,000 for the 2nd best valid algorithm contributed to the Wikipedia Participation Challenge.

Dr Dell Zhang (Department of Computer Science and Information Systems) recently won a prize of US$1,000 for the 2nd best valid algorithm contributed to the Wikipedia Participation Challenge organised by the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), Kaggle and IEEE ICDM-2011.

Dell's solution aims to predict the number of future edits a Wikipedia editor will make, and therefore obtain insights about the sustainable growth of Wikipedia. Using only 21 behavioural dynamics features, he achieved 41.7% improvement over WMF's in-house predictive model, and stood out from 193 scientists around the world who took part in this data mining competition.

WMF is now implementing his algorithm permanently and looks forward to using it in the production environment.
