Mentoring Pathways

Mentoring Pathways is a collaborative programme between Birkbeck, University of London and corporate partners from the business world. These partners include Credit Suisse, Hounslow Council, PA Consulting, and PwC.

A combination of Birkbeck alumni mentors alongside corporate volunteers has enabled us to develop a talented, energetic, experienced and well-networked team to help our students realise their aspirations.

Mentoring Pathways aims to support the employment aspirations of our students by bridging the gap between academic learning and workplace practices, and developing soft skills and confidence.

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • support the development of career plans and goals
  • identify specific areas of employment available to graduates
  • raise aspirations and commitment levels to professional development
  • develop and enhance the following:
    • workplace etiquette
    • inter-personal skills and confidence-building
    • communication skills
    • networking skills
  • expose our students to professional networks and those in senior roles
  • develop people and project management skills

How are mentees matched to a mentor?

    Mentees are matched to a mentor who can best facilitate the objectives of the mentee and if possible, is employed in a sector or discipline to which the mentee aspires. However, we have a finite number of mentors so matching sectors and job roles is not always possible.

How often do the meetings take place?

    Normally, you will meet your mentee once a month and each meeting should last for 1 – 1.5 hours. You should agree the most convenient form of communication between meetings so that you maximise the benefit of ‘face’ time and the mentee comes to each meeting with progress made on the previous objectives.

What are the benefits?

    Most students report that their confidence has increased, they have formed new networks and have greater clarity about how to reach their long term objectives. For those students who have received support to develop new management skills, they report learning new tactics which help them to manage people or projects more effectively.

How long does the mentoring last?

    The programme runs during the academic year, starting in November and ending in July. We promote the programme to final year undergraduates and postgraduate students.
