Ronald Tress Memorial Lecture

On 29 March, Professor Ron Smith delivered the inaugural Ronald Tress Memorial Lecture to a packed lecture theatre of alumni, current students and staff. The title of the lecture was "Military Economics: Defence Choices for the UK".

Ronald Tress was Master of Birkbeck from 1968 to 1977, during which time he established the Economics department. Prior to this, from 1941 to 1945, he was Economic adviser to the British War Cabinet and Professor of Political Economy at the University of Bristol. In 1978 he was appointed director of the Leverhulme Trust.

Following the lecture Betty Low wrote a blog post about how much she had enjoyed this lecture, and being taught by Professor Smith when she was a student at Birkbeck in the 1970s.
