New approaches to bullying and conflict at work: Series launch

When:
Venue: Birkbeck Main Building, Malet Street

No booking required

The Human Rights and Equality Commission recently started conceptualizing bullying as discrimination and as a breach of human rights. As they emphasise the human right to live without threats or mistreatment, our response as scholars has been prolific yet uni-dimensional, each based in their own echelon and discipline without the necessary cross fertilisation of ideas, far less theory.

Building on previous work in this field, Birkbeck, University of London is facilitating a new ESRC series called Vulnerable Selves, Disciplining Others: New approaches to bullying and conflict at work. These topics have been investigated for over twenty years, and much progress has been made to map the field.

There nevertheless remains a desire to understand more fully the concept of bullying at work in all its vicissitudes, and to this end, these new symposia aim to bring together a truly diverse and fragmented group of experts. The series will be running from 2011 to 2013.

The Series Launch comprised of Talks and a Panel Discussion:

  • Introduction by ESRC Series Chair, Dr Andreas Liefooghe
  • Lacanian Psychoanalytical considerations by Prof Noga Wine
  • Bully Yourself or Be Bullied by Dr Carl Cederstrom
  • Dr Marinos Diamantides discusses Bullying and the Law
  • The anti-bullying movement by Prof Howard S Schwartz
  • The Other by artist and Stuckist founder, Naive John
