Research for Mothertongue: helping therapists communicate effectively

Research consultants: Professor Jean-Marc Dewaele and Dr Malcolm Edwards, Department of Applied Linguistics and Communication

Mothertongue is a culturally and linguistically sensitive counselling service for black and minority ethnic clients.

Mothertongue contacted Professor Jean-Marc Dewaele (because of his well-known work on emotional expression in multiple languages) and Dr Malcolm Edwards (because of his expertise in multilingualism and counselling) to carry out research on the ways in which communication differs between monolingual and bilingual therapists who work with clients who do not share their native language.
