Birkbeck has launched a new programme, 'Birkbeck Inspires', a free online events, activities and resources programme designed to inspire learning, provoke thought, and entertain and excite curious minds.

COVID-19 has revealed the permeability of prison walls, the virus spreading from prison staff to prisoners and back into communities, highlighting the extreme health inequalities faced by most prisoners – in developed and less developed countries alike. Catherine Heard, Senior Research Fellow and Director of the World Prison Research Programme at Birkbeck’s Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research (ICPR), will present research on the extent of prison overcrowding worldwide, and the many factors that combine to create today’s unsustainable levels of incarceration. After a short pre-recorded video including a tour of ICPR’s renowned World Prison Brief website, Catherine will take questions in a live Q&A session.
