This research looks at the recent political arena in Egypt since the uprisals in 2011. It analyses and critiques the political situation in the country before and after, focusing in particular on the last 10 years. However, the central focus is on the role of social media, asking whether it had any affect on the uprisals or was a media like any other. Looking at technology determinism and skepticism to analyse the recent situation in Egypt the thesis builds its hypothesis. Egypt has 27 governorates and each represent different challenges for contemporary technology theories. ________________________________________________________________ This research is rooted in Sara’s own biography. Born in Egypt, she had only recently returned to the country after studying aboard when the uprisals began. Sara holds both a BA in International Media and MA in Media and Communications from Goldsmiths, University of London. Her current research is an extension of the MA thesis, which focused on the public sphere and examples of public opinion in Egypt compared to the United States.
