James Sissons

PhD Biology

James was attracted by the high-quality microbiology research in the Department of Biological Sciences. He completed his full-time PhD, funded by a Birkbeck studentship, studying a parasite that can cause blinding keratitis or fatal meningitis.

'Going into a subject in-depth is very satisfying and fulfilling. It also gives you the confidence to take on independent research. I want to pursue a career in biological research, and I was very impressed with Birkbeck's work in this area. Very few labs are looking at how infectious agents infect the cornea to produce eye disease and how pathogens cross from the blood to the brain. It's very important work, which I feel will make a difference.'

James is now working as a research fellow in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, USA.
