Current PhD studentships

For studies beginning in 2013/14

Our research attracts a wide range of funding, and PhD candidates are invited to apply for studentships each year. We currently have the following PhD studentships available for entry in 2013/14.

Information about potential sources of funding for PhD studentships are available to staff here.

Eligibility requirements

Please note that applicants must be able to satisfy specific eligibility requirements in relation to qualifications and residency. Information about the eligibility requirements for studentships are available on the relevant webpages.

PhD studentships/ Graduate Teaching Assistants

Applications are invited for 2 part-time positions as Graduate Teaching Assistants in the the Department of Biological Sciences. The applicant will be expected to pursue studies leading towards a PhD and to provide part-time teaching assistance (20 hours per week during term time).

The duties of the teaching will include delivery and preparation of teaching materials for students as well as demonstrating in practical classes and acting as seminar leaders. An interest in distance learning technology will be an advantage.

Candidates are invited to submit their own research project description or contact academic staff to develop research proposals.

Deadline for applications: 15 April 2013

BBSRC London Interdisciplinary Biosciences PhD Consortium

The Department of Biological Sciences, Birkbeck, is part of the above PhD consortium. The objective of the Programme is to provide students with the skills and knowledge of quantitative and systems approaches to research. The recent revolution in biological sciences has created a new scientific landscape that requires a new model of research training that crosses the boundaries separating traditional disciplines and fields.

The programme delivers research training that supports this new cross-disciplinary landscape; providing mathematical and computational skills to understand and model biological processes and function, while maintaining at the core, training in world-class bioscience that underpins all living systems. We have designed a Programme that provides the skills and confidence necessary to combine experimental and theoretical approaches and to re-engineer living systems.

Science without Borders

The Department of Biological Sciences and Brazil

The Department of Biological Sciences (as well as the former Department of Crystallography) already has valued and longstanding links with Brazil and we welcome the prospect of developing new opportunities through supervision of Brazilian PhD students on the “Science without Borders” programme.

We look forward to welcoming students who are successful in gaining funding from the Science without Border programme to begin their PhD studies in the Autumn Term 2013.
