Research interests

  • Kaposi’s sarcoma is the most common form of AIDs related cancer whose main causative agent is the Kaposi’s Sarcoma-Associated Herpes Virus (KSHV). KSHV infection is also responsible for multicentric Castleman’s disease and primary effusion lymphoma, an aggressive cancer for which there are currently no effective treatments. We seek to understand how KSHV subverts host cellular mechanisms to avoid immune detection and promote proliferation, both of which are central to its malignancy. Mechanisms 'hijacked' by KSHV include the canonical and alternative NF-κB pathways that have been directly linked to malignancy as well as those that function in RNA degradation. These pathways are aberrantly activated by virally encoded, host mimetic proteins and it is our aim to establish how interactions with their cellular targets lead to viral pathogenesis using an interdisciplinary approach to enable the dissection of key protein-protein, protein-nucleic acid complexes. In addition, we also have interests in DNA repair with ongoing projects in prokaryotic excision repair mechanisms, eukaryotic homologous recombination and replication
