The Microbiology laboratories are located on the third floor of the main building at Birkbeck, Malet Street.
Our research teams use a combination of molecular genetic, biochemical, cellular and structural biology approaches to study environmental mycology and the interactions between pathogenic bacteria (including Mycobacteria and Chlamydia) and parasites (Plasmodium, the causative agent of malaria) and their mammalian hosts.

Well-equipped individual research laboratories encompass dedicated Biocontainment Level 2 suites necessary to handle human pathogens, and laminar-flow safety hoods for the manipulation of forensic, medical and environmental samples. Our shared facilities include associated preparation rooms, two new autoclaves, recently upgraded incubators, temperature-controlled growth rooms, and a new Beckman centrifuge.
The area also contains a teaching laboratory for students enrolled on our MSc programmes in Microbiology and Health and Disease. An MRes in Microbiology is currently under development.
