Professor Moores to join Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council’s Pool of Experts
Carolyn Moores will be part of the BBSRC Committee that steers funding for the highest quality research.
Professor Carolyn Moores, will join the BBSRC Pool of Experts in 2016. This group plays a key role in steering BBSRC’s funding by identifying the highest quality research projects.
Participation in BBSRC grant review will give her insight into the funding process and a chance to support cutting edge research, all of which will be invaluable expertise for researchers at Birkbeck to call upon in preparing future grant proposals.
Professor Moores commented: 'As a member of the BBSRC Pool of Experts, I will learn a lot about high quality research from around the UK and how funding decisions are reached. Peer review is essential for academic research progress; I have benefited from the quality peer reviews that I have received, and being a member of the Pool of Experts means I can make a similar contribution to the work of others.'
Professor Moores has recently been awarded a Worldwide Cancer Research grant to fund a post-doctoral researcher, Dr Julia Wenger, for 3 years, for the project Elucidating Inhibition Mechanisms of Mitotic Kinesin Motors using State-of-the-Art Cryo-Electron Microscopy. This research will use state-of-the-art electron microscopy to study the machinery of cell multiplication to find potential drugs that can block it. Such drugs can act as 'spanners in the work' of the out-of-control machinery and thus have the potential to be used as cancer treatments.
