Dr Anthony Roberts is selected as one of the 2018 EMBO Young Investigators

Dr Anthony Roberts, Sir Henry Dale Fellow and Principal Investigator in the Department of Biological Sciences, has been selected as one of this year’s European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) Young Investigators. The scheme aims to support and develop future research leaders as they establish their independent life sciences laboratories. Dr Alan Cheung, a UCL member of the joint Birkbeck/UCL Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology (ISMB) is another of this year’s recipients.

The programme provides a range of benefits for these early career scientists: funding, mentorship from senior EMBO scientists, networking opportunities and training to strengthen leadership and research practice skills. Those on the programme also have access to the main facilities at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany.

The research in Anthony’s laboratory that will benefit from the EMBO award concerns motor proteins: molecular machines that transport cargoes within cells and are important for human health. Anthony said, ’Joining the EMBO Young Investigator Program is a great honour. The interactions it facilitates will help our research to thrive and hopefully open up new lines of collaboration.’
