Event description

“If plan A didn’t work the alphabet has 25 more letters!”

At Birkbeck, Unviversity of London we appreciate that education isn't linear, and some of the biggest barriers to accessing university is confidence, especially around academic study skills. Things like note-taking, academic reading and critical analysis, to name a few.

Enter Plan B!

What is Plan B and is it for me?

Plan B is FREE programme for all prospective students, you do not need any prior university or study experience. The programme is designed to help boost confidence and develop transferable academic study skills. It consists of two parts, in one session:

  1. Interactive academic study skills workshop
  2. Taster lecture, to put into practice the academic skill just developed

What is this Plan B session all about?

6 – 6.45pm: Academic study skills workshop – Academic Reading

In this session, Fleur Rothschild, Learning and Development tutor within the School of Arts will be focusing on:

  • Preparing for Academic reading
  • Quick and efficient reading strategies
  • Effective academic reading strategies for you

7 – 7.45pm: Taster lecture – “Nurturing resilience in yourself and others”

This taster lecture by Ana da Cunha Lewin, an academic within the School of Science, will be referencing your newly developed academic reading skills by looking at 'nurturing resilience' and focusing on:

  • looking at research that suggest that in the face of life’s challenges there are enormous differences in the way that individuals respond
  • understanding “resilience”, the skill that enables us to face and recover from life’s trials and tribulations
  • exploring how we can develop resilience in ourselves as individuals and within our family unit
