Journey Planning & Maps

Planning your initial journey on arrival will depend largely where you will stay in London. Useful information can be found at:

  • Gatwick:

If you are flying into Gatwick, we suggest you take the 'Gatwick Express' to Victoria Station, then take the tube to Euston, or a taxi. Gatwick Express non-stop train service to Victoria runs every 15 minutes with a journey time of 30 minutes. You can book your ticket in advance (but you don’t have to) at: https://www.gatwickexpress.com/.

Other railway options include First Capital Connect (services to London Bridge and St Pancras International run four times an hour with a journey time of between 30 and 45 minutes: http://www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk/) and Southern Trains (services to Victoria via East Croydon and Clapham Junction run four times an hour with a journey time of around 35 minutes: http://www.southernrailway.com/).

You may also wish to travel by coach or taxi. Direct coach service to Victoria operates once an hour with a journey time of around 85 minutes – http://www.nationalexpress.com/). Taxi journey times and costs vary depending on your destination, but take around 65 minutes to central London. You can use the Airport Taxi Operator: http://www.checkercars.com/.

  • Heathrow:

If you are flying in to London Heathrow youmay wish to note that you can take the Underground (Piccadilly Line, East Bound) to Russell Square from where you can walk to Birkbeck. Piccadilly Line trains operate a frequent, cost-effective service into central London with a journey time of approximately 50 – 60 minutes. A single fare costs £4.

You may also take the Heathrow Express. Fast, frequent trains operate from Heathrow to London Paddington. Trains run every 15 minutes and journey time is 15 minutes from Terminals 1 and 3, or 21 minutes from Terminal 5. Fares start at £16.50 for a single or £32 for a return. Find out more: Heathrow Express. Another alternative is taking the Heathrow Connect. Stopping trains run from Heathrow to Paddington via local stations in west London. Trains run every 30 minutes and journey time is 25 minutes from Terminals 1 and 3 or 28 minutes from Terminal 4. A single fare to Paddington is £6.90. Find out more: Heathrow Connect.

Frequent coach services run throughout the day with journey times of between 40 and 80 minutes to Victoria coach station and many other destinations around London (http://www.nationalexpress.com/coach/airport/heathrow.aspx). London taxis are available outside each terminal. The cost to central London is £45 – £70 and the journey time is approximately one hour.

  • Luton

If you are arriving into Luton, we suggest you take a coach to central London. Green Line 757 provides an express coach link between London Luton Airport and Central London from Bays 10 & 11. To book your tickets online, please visit https://kiosk.iristickets.co.uk/k?GreenLineServices.

Another coach service is provided by easyBus, which offers a high frequency, low cost express bus service between Central London and Luton Airport. Located at Bays 10 & 11 outside the main terminal building, easyBus coaches run 24-hours a day between the airport and Central London, with stops at Brent Cross, Finchley Road, Baker Street, Oxford Street/Marble Arch and London Victoria. Online Fares start at £2 one-way and vary according to demand. You should book early to get the best fares. easyBus operates this service in partnership with Greenline.   • Stansted

Stansted Airport's bus and coach station is opposite the main terminal entrance. Coach tickets can be bought at the ticket desk in arrivals (open 06:00 to 01:00), in the coach station (24 hours, seven days a week) or on board. Please note that many coaches and buses are not wheelchair-accessible – please contact the relevant operator for further information. Bus fares and times are subject to change, so please confirm with the operator before you travel. EasyBus runs every 20 minutes. Journey takes about 75 minutes to Central London (Baker St) (http://www.easybus.co.uk/). National Express runs every 10 minutes. Journey takes between 85 and 100 minutes to Victoria (http://www.nationalexpress.com/Airport/stansted.cfm). Terravision A50 runs every 30 minutes and the journey takes about 75 minutes to Victoria (http://booking.terravision.eu/bookingmap.asp).

  • London City Airport

Travelling in London

  • Oyster card: the cheapest way to travel in London - an Oyster Card is a blue plastic card that you can use instead of paper tickets. You can buy your Oyster Card online and have it delivered to your door in advance. Oyster Prices - view all the different price levels.  Peak hours are before 09:30am and between 16:00 and 19:00. Off-Peak is anytime between these hours.
  • Tickets:  can be bought form ticket machines, stations, small shops

Travelling by Car

A daily congestion charge of £10 applies Monday to Friday, between 07:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m. Our central London location also means that parking facilities are not only limited but may be expensive. View driving directions from your location to our main building in Malet Street.

Cycling

Bicycle Hire - There are bicycles all around London for hire - the nearest rack to Birkbeck is in Gordon Square.

An extensive network of cycle rotes lead to Birkbeck, and there are ample cycle rack facilities around the Malet Street building including a number of lockable cycle bins. For more information about cycle routes
