On June 30th, ASSC organised a field trip to Dennis Severs’ House at 18 Folgate Street in Spitalfields. The house exhibits the fictional life of a family of Huguenot silk-weavers from 1724 to early 20th Century with also uncanny traces of the 21st Century. During the visit, all human senses are targeted to experience the life of the family, such as different smells surrounding different rooms. Following the house tour we had the chance to talk about the maintenance of the house, the life of Dennis Severs and his legacy, as well as the ever changing Spitalfields with the curator David Milne. Ahead of our symposium titled Spitalfields: On Development and Destruction that will take place on 18th November, this visit provided us with a chance to discuss and observe reconstruction, urban renewal and destruction particularly in Spitalfields area.
