Entry requirements

Certificates and short courses

You can apply for most of our certificate and short courses without previous study experience.

Where entry requirements or tests do apply, you will find the relevant information in the course listings (always under the heading 'Entry requirements').

Please note: you must be 18 years of age (or over) at the point of enrolment. And, to benefit fully from your studies, you should be able to read, write and speak English fluently. If you feel that you need to improve your written or oral skills in English, we recommend that you enrol on one of our English language courses.

Foundation degree programmes

  • Foundation degrees are designed specifically for students with no formal qualifications. Applicants for admission to foundation degree programmes must be at least 18 years of age, but are not required to satisfy the general entrance requirements for first degrees.
  • Admission is based on the likelihood of your ability to complete the programme successfully and to derive benefit from the programme.
  • We take account of all relevant information, which may include:
    • your personal statement
    • assessment at interview
    • performance in written tasks or other tests set for admission purposes
    • other evidence of your performance or potential
    • relevant work experience.

Undergraduate programmes

Birkbeck will consider all applications for admission, even if you do not have any formal qualifications. However, suggested entry requirements are given with each course in the course listings.
