Vazken Davidian

The Figure of the Bantoukhd [Պանդուխտ, migrant worker] from Ottoman Armenia in Late Nineteenth Century Constantinople Armenian Realism.

Vazken's thesis examines manifestations of Realism, the dominant intellectual philosophy among late nineteenth century native Ottoman artists, focusing in particular upon their engagement with, and representation of, the figure of the migrant worker – the bantoukhd [Պանդուխտ] from Ottoman Armenia / Kurdistan, present in large numbers in the city. These are considered against the broader frame of existing Ottoman and post-Ottoman art historiography and its methods, and utilised to challenge nationalist and nation-centric art history production, and to call for new, revisionist Ottoman art histories.
