Bitter Crone or Wise Woman – exploring the archetype of the solitary female in contemporary fiction

I am currently writing a novel that explores the relationship between a middle aged American academic visiting the UK and her seventeenth century ancestor, a healer who fled from Sussex to Massachusetts having been denounced as a witch. My critical analysis considers representations of the solitary woman in 20C British fiction, reflecting on issues of social exclusion, dominant cultural responses and the challenge of nonconformity.
